School Bookings Open for Slingsby’s 2017 Premiere

29 November 2016

We have some exciting news!

In July 2017 we premiere Slingsby’s 7th production, a new stage adaptation of Erich Kästner’s classic 1929 novella Emil and the Detectives.

There is no doubt that 2016 has been a very interesting year for Slingsby with many changes to arts funding across Australia. 2016 has also been a very inspiring year for us with the premiere of our acclaimed production of The Young King and an overwhelming expression of love and support from our audiences here in Adelaide, across Australia and around the globe. We are thrilled that despite these ups and downs we are able to once again invite Adelaide audiences into the premiere season of a new theatrical adaptation crafted by Slingsby’s team of wonderful artists.

Kästner’s Emil and The Detectives tells the story of a good boy who takes a train to the city to spend his school holidays with his aunt and grandmother. On his journey, a man in a bowler hat steals the money Emil’s mother has worked hard to save and entrusted to him. Emil enlists the help of children (the Detectives) to locate and capture the thief.

At its heart, this is the story of a trickster who takes advantage of an innocent but is ultimately outwitted by a determined Emil. Despite being children in an adult world Emil and the kid detectives find power in their numbers, bring the thief to account and eventually triumph.

This production will be created for audiences in Years 4 and up. As with previous Slingsby productions there will be themes and theatrical approaches that will resonate and captivate students from Year 4 to 12 and beyond.

We have assembled an incredible team of artists to create this production: our cast of Elizabeth Hay and Tim Overton along with Quincy Grant (composer), Geoff Cobham (lighting designer), Nicki Bloom (playwright), Wendy Todd (designer), Ailsa Paterson (costume design) and Christopher Petridis (AV design). Really, what a team!

Bookings for school matinee performances are now available (see below) with tickets $16.50 per student (a ratio of staff free) and we will provide Education Resources created by Hannah McCarthy-Oliver and post-performance Q&As for students and staff.

We are also developing a series of workshops and mini-residencies that will greatly enhance students’ experiences of this production. These workshops and mini-residencies can be booked for your school in addition to the performance. We’ll send more information soon.

We hope you will join us for the world premiere season of this new stage adaptation, which Slingsby will present in Level 5, Myer Centre, Adelaide – a place of incredible theatrical potential!
